What is happening at our station?
HWRUG continues to engage with GTR and Network Rail to achieve enhancements and overdue maintenance to our station. We are also engaged
with GTR to deliver our proposals under their Passenger Benefit Fund, and you can read about progress below.

Hadley Wood leads the way with life-saving equipment
In December 2019, Hadley Wood was chosen by GTR Great Northern as the launch site for their programme to install a defibrillator at every station and HWRUG held a special celebratory event for rail users and all the local community. Monken Hadley Church Choir and friends welcomed everyone with Christmas carols and the ticket hall was packed for a demonstration of the defibrillator on “Annie”, a long-suffering dummy. Our guest of honour was honorary Hadley Wooder Georgie Parkes, née Horlock, who spoke movingly of her own experience of a cardiac arrest five years ago when she was only 24. Georgie said, "It brought me back to life. I was very lucky to have that defibrillator. It has meant I have had a second chance at life. I went on to get married and now have a beautiful one-year-old daughter." Everyone then joined in a rousing rendition of the “Hadley Wood Heart Carol”, words written specially for the occasion to the tune of “We Wish you a Merry Christmas”!

Passenger Benefit Fund
The Passenger Benefit Fund was set up in 2019 at the direction of the DfT in recompense for the 2018 Timetable Debacle. As one of the worst affected stations, Hadley Wood was allocated £80,000 and HWRUG responded on behalf of the whole community to GTR’s request for bids in July 2019. Our top priority items would enhance the step-free facilities at our station which were introduced from 2017 thanks to the HWRUG campaign (see below). They comprise an accessible toilet, a platform hump to enable step free access from train to street on Platform 4, and adequate audible and visible customer information facilities throughout the length of Platform 4. An initial survey for the toilet was conducted in January 2020 and HWRUG are closely engaged with GTR to monitor progress on our bid.
Other HWRUG Successes
Other notable results to date include new waiting facilities on the northbound platform.
The transformation of the station forecourt with a Welcome sign, a departures screen, cycle racks and a flower trough kindly maintained by The Little Flower House.
The ticket hall is now open on weekday evenings until 8pm to provide a warm and sheltered space for anyone waiting for a train.
A significant HWRUG achievement was the removal in February 2019 of the Biffa bin from the main entrance to a specially constructed compound set apart from passenger routes.
HWRUG also commissioned the plaque to world-famous locomotive designer Sir Nigel Gresley at the main entrance.
The overbridge has been brightened up with a History Gallery and the platforms by HWRUG noticeboards.
