Sir Nigel Gresley

Sir Nigel Gresley was one of Britain's most famous steam locomotive engineers and erstwhile President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.  He lived in Hadley Wood from 1923-29 at Camlet House, Beech Hill, when he was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway. Sir Nigel was the designer of perhaps the most iconic steam locomotives ever, Flying Scotsman, the first to be officially recorded at over 100 mph in passenger service, and Mallard, which still holds the record for the fastest steam locomotive in the world, at 126 mph. His engines were shining examples of both aesthetic and mechanical elegance.

Hadley Wood Rail User Group partnered with The Gresley Society to fund a permanent memorial to Sir Nigel at his old home station, unveiled on Saturday 7th October 2017 by the television railway personality and former MP for our Enfield Southgate constituency, Michael Portillo, in the presense of Sir Nigel's grandson and great-granddaughter.  Read the full story on the Gresley Plaque page.
